Bennett honored for military service

The Spectator - 2/12/2019

Feb. 12--BELMONT -- The Allegany CountyBoard of Legislators honored US Army veteran Richard Bennett for his military service before Monday's regular meeting.

A native of Caneadea, Bennett served in the Army from Nov. 3, 1966 through Nov. 1, 1968, achieving the rank of Specialist Fifth Class with a primary specialty of power plant operator/instructor.

Bennett received basic and advanced individual training at Fort Dix, NJ with his permanent duty station at Fort Belvoir, Va. He earned the Army Good Conduct Medal, Defense Service Medal and Marksman Medal.

Bennett returned to Allegany County several years ago after retiring from Redcom, a Victor-based research, development and communications company. Bennett and his wife Judith reside in Caneadea and have one daughter, two grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Bennett is a longtime member of the Williamson American Legion Post #394 as well as the Allegany County American Legion.

"We've got a great country. I love it," Bennett told the board. "When I got my draft notice I could've gone to Canada with a bunch of others. I didn't. I was ready to serve, even if it cost me my life. Please, do what you can to keep this country great."

In regular business, it was a quiet day on the legislative front with just one resolution coming before the board. The board approved an agreement with the Allegany County Agricultural Society for payment of the 2019 budgetary appropriation of $8,000.

Susan Stout was appointed to the Citizens Advisory Council to the Office for the Aging.
