USCA inducts veterans, military students into honor society

Aiken Standard - 5/3/2017

May 03--USC Aiken recognized its veteran and military students' scholarship and academic achievements Thursday during the Pi Alpha Sigma induction ceremony.

The USCA veterans honor society, Pi Alpha Sigma, is an academic honor society that requires at least a 3.25 GPA for membership. This GPA must be sustained for continued membership. In addition to the inductees, a couple of students earned special distinctions.

"Our Veterans and Military Student Success Center provides support to active duty and reserve retirees and veterans, their spouses and their children. We are pleased to induct USC Aiken veterans, military spouses and their children into Pi Alpha Sigma," said USCA Chancellor Dr. Sandra Jordan.

Nikolas Hartwig, who will graduate Wednesday with a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with a finance concentration, has been selected to be one of only 25 students nationwide who make up the inaugural cohort of the Washington Center's Veterans Employment Trajectory Initiative, sponsored by the Prudential Foundation.

Hartwig, a U.S. Marine from Hollister, California, who works in USCA's Veteran and Military Student Success Center, deployed several times, worked at a defense contractor and now is using his Post-9/11 GI Bill to earn his bachelor's degree.

Through the VET internship, he will spend the summer in Washington, D.C., gaining insight and experience. This paid internship, valued at more than $14,000, will immerse him into the workforce, giving him unprecedented access to corporate America and preparing him to transition from USCA to the working world.

Hartwig plans to continue his education through professional certifications in the financial analyst field as well as program management certifications. He also plans to attend graduate school to study economics and finance.

Graduate student Emily Sieback was chosen as the USC Aiken Military Spouse of the Year, an award the university instituted this year.

"We are literally on the eve of Military Spouse Appreciation Month," said Robert Murphy, director of the Veteran and Military Student Success Center. "While military spouses deserve recognition 24/7, the Department of Defense dedicates May as the month to pay special tribute to the service and sacrifices of military spouses.

"While military spouses may not wear a uniform, they certainly do their part to help protect the freedoms we enjoy. They are the unsung heroes who take care of myriad responsibilities so their loved ones can focus on their jobs."

USCA's Veteran and Military Student Success Center offers tailored support to veterans and military students on campus working to make their educational dreams reality.

USCA's innovative Veteran and Military Student Success Center has been ranked as the No. 1 public regional college in the South by U.S. News and World Report. It is the only institution in South Carolina named Best for Vets by Military Times.

"We are grateful for our faculty, staff donors and friends of the university who have invested their time and talents into our students, particularly those who provide scholarships for our veterans and military students or who have generously donated to the university so that we can continue the assist our students through our Veteran and Military Student Success Center," Jordan said.
