City's banners honor veterans, first responders

Daily Item - 5/21/2017

May 21--SUNBURY -- The Hometown Hero Veterans and First Responder banner program kicked off Saturday even though the day was gloomy and chilly.

At 10 a.m. Saturday, the rain was still coming down but a handful of people braved the weather and watched as state Rep. Lynda Culver and Sunbury Councilwoman Beth Kremer spoke about the importance of honoring those who have served the country and people.

"Even though it is raining it makes no difference," Kremer said in Cameron Park where the opening ceremony was held. "Any day is a great day to honor these folks."

The organizers of Sunbury Revitalization Inc.'s sixth annual Hometown Heroes Banners expanded the program this year to include police officers, firefighters, paramedics and other first responders.

The sponorship process started earlier this year for both active duty and veteran soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines with ties to Northumberland County, as well as first responders who serve or have served in the county.

The banners are displayed along Market and Front streets. Veterans will be displayed around Cameron Park and first responders along Front Street.

"I am always honored to be here," Culver said. "This is always a great day when we can come together and honor these individuals for all they have done for us and our country."

About 20 people gathered under the gazebo at the park.

"I came out to show support," Ken Diehl, of Northumberland said. "The weather did not cooperate with this event today but I am happy to be here to show my support."

Sunbury Revitalization Inc., President Jebb Strotter said he was happy people showed up to show support despite the rain Saturday.

"We are thrilled people came out and its a real testament to our heroes," Strotter said. "Both in terms of military and first responders and we are happy to hang these banners proudly."

Strotter said the group had more than 30 banners sponsored this year.
