North Huntingdon to name new road after Korean War veteran

Tribune-Review - 7/20/2018

July 20--The commander of the J. Howard Snyder Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 781 of North Huntingdon will have a new street in the township named after him.

Donald Kattic, a Marine Corps veteran of the Korean War and retired Norwin High School teacher, will be honored with the naming on Sgt. D. Kattic Way in the third phase of the new Brookhaven housing plan being built by North Huntingdon developer Bob Shuster.

Township commissioners approved naming the street after Kattic for all of his work on behalf of veterans and various activities in the community.

"I can't believe it. That's so nice of them to do that," Kattic said.

Commissioner David Herold proposed naming the street after Kattic.

Shuster, also a veteran, said he has had several commissioners approach him to name a street after Kattic.

"Don's a great asset to the community," said Commissioner Duane Kucera.

Kattic said he was recently elected commander of the VFW Post, succeeding Eric Gass. He has served 19 years as the local VFW commander.

Kattic had spearheaded efforts to have the 20-foot Norwin High School Veterans Memorial built in 2015, Shuster said.

The Norwin School Board honored Kattic in April 2016 with a special award for distinguished community service. He envisioned the concept of a memorial to honor Norwin graduates who paid the ultimate sacrifice while serving their country.

Kattic also led the community campaign to make the monument a reality with him and a team of volunteers raising nearly $50,000 from many generous donors, the school board said..
