Veterans, memorial are topics of Clinton History Club meeting

Clinton Herald - 10/15/2018

Oct. 14--CLINTON -- The Clinton History Club will meet at 9:30 a.m. Thursday at the Ericksen Community Center. This month's theme for the Clinton History Club meeting centers on veterans and the Veterans Memorial in Riverview Park.

Bring any Clinton/Lyons photos, newspaper stories, family pictures, or family stories about local veterans to share. Service-related items or military memorabilia would also be of interest.

The club's recent survey shows that the number one historic building in Clinton to tour is the Chicago & Northwest Railroad Depot. The favorite historic home to tour is the Curtis Mansion at 420 Fifth Ave South. The favorite historic landmark to tour is the Clinton County Courthouse.

After the 9:30 a.m. meeting, the group will adjourn at 10:15 a.m. to tour the Clinton County World War I Veterans Memorial located in Riverview Park at the end of Fifth Avenue. This will be an ideal time to bring a camera.

During the tour, organizers will provide information on the cleaning and restoration of the Leonard Crunelle, World War I Veterans Memorial and potential city improvements to the area. The World War I Veterans Memorial was dedicated on Veterans Day in 1930.

The group also will have an opportunity to view the two large obelisks commissioned by Miller Brothers Monument Company of Iowa City. There are 232 names listed on both monuments. The service members listed were either Killed in Action or Missing in Action during World War I, World War II, the Korean War or the Vietnam War.

The 232 service members on the Veterans Memorial gave their all for the many freedoms we enjoy today, said club organizer John Rowland.

"The last words placed on the memorial remind us about the price of freedom and simple say 'Lest We Forget,'" he said. "For better or worse we are the caretakers of our community's heritage and roots. We alone are responsible for passing on the story 'Lest We Forget.'"

Clinton American Legion Post 190 and the Clinton AMVETS Post 28 have joined together to work on improvements for the Clinton County Veterans Memorial. The Clinton History Club supports this project.

Regarding new business, the Clinton History Club is working in partnership with the Clinton Herald on a program related to the past history of Clinton/Lyons. Watch the Herald for an important announcement about this exciting new program.
