National Alliance on Mental Illness S.E. Idaho sets free Family-to-Family classes
Idaho State Journal - 5/29/2018
POCATELLO — The National Alliance on Mental Illness Southeast Idaho is hosting its annual Family-to-Family class. The free classes start June 5 and will be held Tuesday and Thursday nights at 6 p.m. at the Hope and Recovery Center, 210 E. Center St. in Pocatello, in the main conference room.
NAMI Family-to-Family is a free, 12-session educational program for family, significant others and friends of people living with mental illness. Research shows that the program improves the coping and problem-solving abilities of the people closest to an individual living with a mental health condition. The class is taught by NAMI-trained family members who have been there.
NAMI Family-To-Family not only provides critical information for taking care of the person you love, but you’ll also find out that you’re not alone. Recovery is a journey, and there is hope. The group setting of Family-to-Family offers mutual support — you can experience compassion and reinforcement from people who understand your situation. You can also help others through your own experience. In the program, you’ll learn about:
n How to manage crises, solve problems and communicate effectively.
n Taking care of yourself and managing your stress.
n Developing the confidence and stamina to provide support with compassion.
n Finding and using local supports and services.
n Up-to-date information on mental health conditions and how they affect the brain.
n Current treatments, including evidence-based therapies, medications and side effects.
n The impact of mental illness on the entire family.
