Farming workshop in Unity offered to veterans, military personnel

Tribune-Review - 6/2/2020

Jun. 2--Veterans and military service members in the agriculture industry can get a view of the farming business on June 12 at the Veteran Farming Workshop in Unity.

The Pennsylvania Veterans Farm Project is sponsoring its first farm workshop in Westmoreland County from 9 a.m. to noonJune 12 at Ralph and Ann Frye's farm on Pleasant Lane, said Mimi Brooker, director of the Veterans Farm Project. The three-generation family dairy farm features The Creamery, an artisan cheese facility.

The workshop is geared toward those who have been farming 10 years or less, but all are welcome, project officials said.

Those participating in the workshop will take a field walk to see best management practices installed with technical and financial assistance from Natural Resources Conservation Service, in addition to speakers on grants, honey production, and U.S. Department of Agriculture programming for beginning and established farmers.

"We have found there is a very real need for this," Brooker said of the workshop.

The attendance is limited to 20 persons. Masks and social distancing will be required at the workshop to comply with the state and Centers for Disease Control guidelines.

The organization will charge a $5 fee for the workshop.
